About the UWUA

Strikes

If the union and Columbia Gas can’t reach a deal on a contract, one option for the union is to call a strike, taking you off work and onto a picket line. A strike is not guaranteed to happen, but it could. Don’t want to strike?  The union can fine or discipline you.

In the last 10 years, UWUA has been involved in 4 work stoppages which involved 1,320 workers.*

What’s At Risk During a Strike?

When union members are put on the picket line by the unions, they find out firsthand just what they’re risking during an economic strike.

  • Paychecks from Columbia Gas would stop.
  • Strikers may not qualify for unemployment in many states.
  • Strikers may have to pay the entire premium cost for their health insurance policies.
  • Customer service and relationships suffer.
  • In an economic strike, a worker out on a strike can be permanently replaced and have to wait for a job to open up to get off the preferential recall list.
